In order to free up the railway reservation for the development of the Kelani Valley railway line, a ceremony to present ownership certificates for new housing units at the “Pearl City Residencies” apartment complex to 116 residents was held today (06) under the patronage of the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Mr. Bimal Rathnayake.
At present, several programs are being implemented under the current government to resettle unauthorized occupants of the Kelani Valley railway reservation. The "Pearl City Residencies" apartment project aims to provide 120 housing units to those unauthorized settlers living along the railway reservation from Nawinna to Padukka. This project is funded by the Asian Development Bank.
The agreement signing ceremony with the new residents of this apartment complex, located in the Malapalla area of Kottawa, took place last Tuesday (03) at the headquarters of the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA). The NHDA is responsible for implementing the social mobilization programs of the entire project. Accordingly, NHDA General Manager Eng. K.A. Janaka also provided awareness to the new residents on agreements, apartment complex details, ownership documentation, and maintenance activities during the event.
This ten-story apartment complex has been built on land owned by the Sri Lanka Railway Department. The value of one housing unit is LKR 18.2125 million, and the total value of the project exceeds LKR 2 billion.
The occasion was attended by Colombo District Member of Parliament Mr. Devananda Suraveera, Senior Professor of the University of Kelaniya and Chairperson of the National Institute of Development Mrs. Wasantha Subasinghe, NHDA Chairman Mr. Aravinda Sirinatha, NHDA General Manager Eng. K.A. Janaka, Director of Colombo Suburban Railway Projects Mr. Upali Mallikarachchi, along with several other officials and local government representatives.
