Solutions for the Issues at the Mattegoda Housing Complex
The Kottawa–Mattegoda Housing Complex was constructed approximately 40 years ago by the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA). Spread over an area of about 72 acres, the complex is currently home to nearly 1,500 families. However, a number of serious issues exist within the housing scheme. One of the major concerns is the wastewater management pond system, which is currently in a critical condition. Although approximately Rs. 200 million has been allocated to resolve this issue, it has not yet been possible to implement solutions due to various reasons. Similarly, although the Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha has attempted to initiate several development projects, these too have been stalled due to multiple obstacles.
During an inspection visit held today (24th), Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, stated that the existing issues have been identified and that necessary investigations will be carried out to provide prompt solutions. He further mentioned that the stalled development projects will be recommenced in the near future. The visit was attended by officials from the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha, Department of Agrarian Services, the Chairman and officials of the National Housing Development Authority, the Divisional Secretary, and Grama Niladhari officers, among others.
